Help Ten Families Achieve Financial Stability

Discuss how to support self-sufficiency efforts to escape poverty with our friends from the Department of Health and Human Services, Board of Social Services, Legal Services of NJ Poverty Research Institute and others at 4pm.

Monthly Costs for one family (1 adult + 1 preschooler): Total $2,811 *

Funding Goals:

Housing for one month $1,192 Food $341
Transportation $59 Health Care $254
Child Care $709 Miscellaneous $256

- More than 40% of New Jersey’s single mothers are raising their children in poverty.

- 93,000 children under age 6 are living in poverty - an increase of 35% since 2001!**

“Research proves that the stresses that poverty causes – hunger, insecurity, poor living conditions – can hurt a young child’s brain development, reducing the chances that they will grow up safe, healthy, educated and prepared to become productive citizens.”**

These findings underscore the job we have ahead of us and the implications for the future if we fail. What are the job prospects for children with poor academic performance due to sub par brain development?

That is why United Way of Central Jersey focuses on programs that provide safe, reliable, high quality pre-school for low-income children. You can help. Join our discussion on self-sufficiency efforts to escape poverty at 4pm.

Your pledges help to provide the basic needs for a single mother and her preschool child identified through United Way’s Nurse-Family Partnership program. Since fundraising is the goal of the event, we ask that all participants raise a minimum of $100. That’s not even enough to pay for the meals for one month for one of these families. Can you provide for more than one family?
