Is helping others to achieve financial self-sufficiency your goal?

You can make a contribution that helps vulnerable populations become independent, self-sustaining, instead of dependent on welfare services.

Problem:

Families with children account for 36% of the homeless population (source: The National Coalition for the Homeless)

Solution:

Research shows that people without safe, stable homes and enough food to eat, are more likely to engage in unsafe or risky behaviors.

Nurse-Family Partnership

United Way of Central Jersey implements a program that helps at-risk, low income first-time mothers. The Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP), a program with over 30 years of research evidence such as:

  • 48% reduction in child abuse and neglect
  • 61% fewer arrests of mothers
  • 29% decrease in subsequent births within 2 years after delivery of the first child
  • 67% reduction in behavioral/intellectual problems at age 6.

Trained nurses visit mothers during pregnancy and until their child reaches two in order to help ensure a healthy environment, access to social services and to mentor for success.

You can fund a family for two years of home visits and counseling for $7,500.

Research shows that for every $1.00 invested in NFP, $2.88 of government spending is saved including, food stamps, Medicaid, savings in criminal justice expense, etc.

Senior Food Shopping Service

Problem :

Long-term care is extremely expensive for both seniors and people with disabilities.

  • 70% of seniors are impoverished within one year of entering a nursing home.

Solution:

United Way of Central Jersey is helping the elderly and disabled to save money by enabling them to remain in their homes and out of managed care.

You can help fund home healthcare, transportation and nutritious food.

The Senior Food Shopping Program asks volunteers to go online to shop for homebound seniors.

  • Can you fund the $15 shopping and delivery fees for low-income seniors who cannot get out of their home or handle heavy packages?
  • You can volunteer to gather food and clothes for people in need.
  • You can volunteer to join a group of leaders committed to helping single women achieve financial self-sufficiency.
  • You can advocate to attract employers offering higher paying jobs.
  • You can advocate to provide more low-income housing.
  • You can give to fund a mother and child in the Nurse-Family Partnership program. $7,500 funds a family for a year of home visits.
  • You can give to fund the $15 shopping and distribution charges for groceries delivered to the elderly. Once a month for one year is: $180.
