UNITED WAY OF CENTRAL JERSEY
COMMUNITY INVSTMENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Who decides where the money United Way raises each year goes? Concerned, caring people like you make that decision, and YOU can be one of them by volunteering to serve on a Community Investment Review Committee.

Each year the United Way recruits community volunteers to allocate funds in support of our three priority impact areas:

Children Ready to Succeed
Ensures healthy development and school readiness of children 0 to 5 yrs old

Youth on Track
Prepares youth age 6-18 to become accountable adults.

Families Living Well
Ensures that families with children are healthy and economically self- sufficient, safe and protected.

Safety Net Services
Provides critical, time-limited emergency support for children, youth and families with children

As a Community Investment Volunteer you will be asked to read program proposals and meet with non-profit agency officials in order to assist United Way in making funding decisions.

Volunteers participate in proposal review meetings of approximately two hours in length over a three month period beginning in January. Meetings take place at the United Way building in Milltown in the early morning or early evening depending on volunteer availability and preference. Each Review Committee will be chaired by an experienced volunteer who will guide you and your fellow Committee members through the process. United Way staff will be available for assistance as well as attend all meetings. A volunteer orientation and training session will be scheduled prior to reviewing proposals. United Way will also offer topic area information sessions for volunteers who are interested in learning more about the issues United Way is addressing in each of our priority funding areas Volunteers will also have the opportunity to conduct site visits as their schedules permit to organizations that are requesting funding to gain a fuller understanding of the program, increase their knowledge of the community, observe the program in action, and ensure that clients receive quality services in a safe, handicap accessible, respectful and culturally competent environment. This volunteer assignment will give individuals an interesting opportunity to become more knowledgeable about available programs for infants, children, and families. Volunteers will help set priorities for the need for services and directly participate in the process of making critical funding recommendations. Community Investment volunteers will become aware of the most critical needs in our community and be able to advocate for policy and services to meet the education, income and health needs of those who live and work in Central Jersey.
